A Delicate Matter

As we have more than enough kitchen appliances, and no where to store anything more, (Heather's books are taking up all the extra closet space) we respectfully announce that it is not necessary to purchase any wedding gifts for this occasion. What we would really appreciate however, is a letter or a card from you with any memories, wishes or advice you would like to share with us. We're new at this marriage thing, so we'll happily take all the wisdom you have to spare!

What about the Weather?

August weather in Winnipeg is notorious for either being very, very hot, or having torrential downpours. If it rains and it does not look like it will stop any time soon, we'll go ahead with the ceremony, but cancel the picnic.

However, we're gambling that it won't, and in that case it will probably be quite warm. So please wear something cool and comfortable, but fitting for a wedding. And if you are of the female persuasion, this is a wonderful excuse to buy that pretty dress you want, but just did not have a good enough reason to justify its purchase!

WHERE?

Where is this place any ways?

King's Park is a gorgeous park just down the road from the University of Manitoba. We had our first date there, our engagement took place there, and now we're going to get married there as well.
The ceremony and picnic will take place in the Informal Gardens, which we have rented from 9 am to 5 pm on August 9th, 2009. The park has many beautiful areas including a Tall Grass Prairie Garden, Chinese Pagoda, and a waterfall. It is bounded on three sides by the Red River.

Here's a map of the park, and the Google Map Website for further directions:

WHAT?

Yes, we're serious. It's a picnic potluck wedding!

When we first sat down and began to discuss our wedding, our top priority, other than getting married to each other in front or our friends and family, was to make sure that those friends and family members had a fun, relaxed day.

As Student Loans Canada does not yet have a loan for students getting married, we had to get creative. We decided to go as old-school as you can possibly get, and hearken back to the days of when a wedding was a chance for everyone to simply get together on a village green and share food, memories and advice for the couple.

Our version of this is a potluck picnic in the park. We'll provide the drinks, the paper plates, etc. the dessert and the reason for the occasion, and you bring a delicious picnic-type dish to share! If you like, you can also simply bring a picnic for yourself or your family. Pack along a couple camping chairs and a frisbee, and you'll be all set for the wedding. The picnic will be held directly after the ceremony, in the same location.

WHO?

Who are we?

For those of you that only know one of us and not the other, here is a quick run down!

Jeffrey Allen:
28 years old
Son of Maurice and Dawn Allen of Carman, MB.
Finishing up his Masters in Computer Science

Heather Dreger:
25 years old
Daughter of Lothar and Isobel Dreger of Mitchell, MB
Eagerly waiting to begin her Masters in Literary Theory in Sept '09.

We met at I.Q.'s - the coffee shop at the University of Manitoba - and possibly began to fall in love during an intense conversation about dragons, science fiction and the ethical implications of robotic intelligence. It took us a while to figure it out, but now we are most happily in love, and have been so for awhile.

We'll be posting a picture of us in the near future!

WELCOME

We're so glad you found your way here to our blog. We'll be posting information about us, our wedding, and anything else that comes to mind in the next few months. The big day is August 9th, 2009 at the Informal Gardens in King's Park, Winnipeg. The ceremony will begin a 1:30 p.m. but feel free to come a little early. After the ceremony, we'll be having a picnic potluck lunch and then the rest of the afternoon is mostly unstructured - playing croquet, lawn bowling, kicking around soccer ball, or just enjoying the beautiful park.

We are really looking forward to celebrating the occasion of our marriage with you. Thank you for sharing in our joy!
